Options

  • Rows: Number of rows in the grid
  • Columns: Number of columns in the grid
  • Square Cells: Makes every cell as tall as it is wide. The number of rows then follows the column width, and the grid stops at the last full row

Bounds

  • Fit to Comp: Fills the composition with the grid. The outer lines are inset by half the stroke width so they stay fully visible
  • Corner A: Starting point of the grid when Fit to Comp is off
  • Corner B: Ending point of the grid when Fit to Comp is off

Margins

  • Link Sides: Uses the Top value for all four sides
  • Top, Right, Bottom, Left: Space between the bounds and the grid on each side

Gutter

  • Gutter X: Horizontal spacing between columns
  • Gutter Y: Vertical spacing between rows

Appearance

  • Line Color: Color of the grid lines
  • Opacity: Transparency of the grid lines
  • Stroke Width: Thickness of the grid lines
  • Show Margin Box: Shades the area between the composition edge and the grid, so margins and custom bounds are easy to see

How to use

  1. Ensure you have an active composition
  2. Click the "Grid Overlay" button
  3. A guide layer with the options above will be created. Change any value in the Effect Controls panel and the grid updates in real time

Note

💡 The layer is a guide layer, so it never renders in your output. To include it in a render, right-click the layer and untick Guide Layer, or use Layer > Guide Layer from the menu.
