The window has five tabs. Each tab is one way of renaming, and the tab that is open is the one that runs.

Add

  • Prefix: text put in front of every name
  • Suffix: text put after every name
  • Insert: text put inside every name, at the position in at pos. 1 is before the first character, a negative number counts from the end, and 0 is the end of the name

Replace

  • Find: the text to look for in the names
  • Replace: the text that takes its place. Leave it empty to remove the found text
  • Match case: finds the text only when upper and lower case match

Number

  • Name: "Original" keeps each layer's own name, "New name" lets you type one name for all of them
  • Sep: the separator between the name and the number. Click the arrow to pick Hyphen, Underscore, Space, Spaced hyphen, Pipe or None
  • Start: the first number. The digits you type set the padding: 01 gives two digits, 001 three
  • Step: how much the number grows from one layer to the next
  • Position: After name or Before name
  • Direction: numbers the layers top to bottom, bottom to top, or in the order you selected them
  • Replace old number: removes a number the layer already has on the chosen side before adding the new one, so Line-05 becomes Line-01

Clean

  • Strip: Extension turns hero.png into hero, Copy suffix turns Sky 2 or Sky copy into Sky, End number turns Line-07 into Line, Spaces removes spaces at both ends and doubled spaces
  • Remove: cuts this many characters from the first or the last part of the name. 0 is off
  • Range: cuts the characters from one position to another, counted from 1. 0 is off
  • Case: "Same", "lowercase", "UPPERCASE", "Title Case" or "Sentence case"

Pattern

  • Pattern: builds every name from text and tokens. Click the arrow on the left to insert a token, and the arrow on the right for recent patterns
  • $name: Layer name
  • $source: Source footage or comp
  • $text: Text layer content
  • $type: Layer type, such as Solid, Shape, Text or Null
  • $label: Label color
  • $index: Layer index
  • $effects: Effect names
  • $matte: Matte type
  • $parent: Parent layer
  • $children: Child layers
  • $comp: Comp name
  • $n, $nn, $nnn: Counter as 1, 01 or 001

A token that is empty for a layer, such as $parent on a layer without a parent, is left out of the name.

Preview and buttons

  • Current / New: lists the selected layers with the name each one will get. A layer that stays as it is shows "(unchanged)", a locked layer shows "(locked)"
  • Update expressions: updates the expressions that use the renamed layers, so they keep working. This may slow the rename slightly
  • Rename: renames the layers. It is available when at least one name will change
  • Close: closes the window

How to use

  1. Select the layers you want to rename
  2. Run the tool
  3. Open the tab for the kind of rename you need: Add, Replace, Number, Clean or Pattern
  4. Fill in the fields and check the result in the New column
  5. Click Rename

Note

💡 The text fields remember what you typed before. Click the arrow next to a field to pick a recent entry. Locked layers are not renamed. The number of layers that will change shows at the bottom of the window
